Shopping

Beyond being frugal and shopping around, there are plenty of ways to save as a student. We’ve provided some advice you might find helpful.

Shopping tips

It's easy to spend money and much harder to save. But, by taking a few precautions you can make a trip into town far more affordable.

  • Do your research – especially when making a large purchase.
  • Ask other students about the cheapest local shops and markets.
  • Keep receipts and guarantees in case things go wrong.
  • Check with shops to see if you can get a student discount with your TOTUM card.
  • Always invest in a good quality coat, footwear and a bag for university.
  • Use vouchers when you go shopping. For a good collection of vouchers and online discount codes, visit MyVoucherCodes.

Your TOTUM card, powered by NUS entitles you to a number of savings and discounts at local and national companies. Remember to carry it with you, and always ask if you are unsure. Studentbeans.com and voucherbox.co.uk also have discounts and deals available for students.

Secondhand shopping

There are plenty of shops and websites selling good-quality secondhand clothes, furniture and books in Brighton.

  • You may be able to buy secondhand course books from other students on your course.
  • Check out charity shops for good quality bargains.
  • Swap your unwanted clothes with those of your friends.
  • For secondhand furniture try Shabitat (Instagram).
  • Join Brighton's Freecycle network to see what people in the area are giving away for free.
